Case study of NEBOSH Diploma delegate

 14 Jan 2008

Individual Profile

Hakam Alotaibi works as Senior Process Engineer and Process Safety Management Co-ordinator at the Petrochemical Industries company, a subsidiary of KPC in Kuwait . He has a chemical engineering background. He had already taken the NEBOSH International Certificate with Connaught. He wanted to develop his qualifications further and needed to gain chartered membership of an internationally recognised, leading health & safety body i.e. Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) and benefit professionally from continuing professional membership.

Why Connaught

Hakam chose Connaught because he was pleased with his experience of successfully completing the NEBOSH International Certificate. He recognised them to be market leaders and was reassured by the good examination pass record.

Training Solution

He decided to take the NEBOSH International Diploma with CHSS attending 6 weeks, in blocks of 1 week over 11 months led by 5 Chartered Health & Safety Consultant Tutors who are part of the dedicated Diploma team. The Tutors, drawing on their professional background in industry led interactive sessions with practical application of health & safety issues, sometimes breaking into workshops to discuss & prepare examination questions & assignment briefs. He was provided with a set of full colour graphically designed comprehensive course notes that are easy to use presenting information in a clear & illustrative manner. Tables, diagrams, images and charts were tools used to communicate the information and this acts as permanent health & safety reference material to be used in the workplace.

He found the Consultants highly qualified and very supportive and established a good relationship with them benefiting from their help throughout the course and also once he had finished. He enjoyed sharing workplace experiences of managing health & safety with fellow delegates and developed valuable friendships and professional networks.

He passed his Diploma and gained Grad IOSH designatory letters after his name and is now planning to complete his continuing professional development and gain chartered membership of IOSH & IIRSM with the designatory letters CMIOSH & MIIRSM to be used after his name.

Benefits of the NEBOSH Diploma

  • The qualifications have provided him with substantially more in-depth knowledge of health & safety issues in his work.
  • He has the skills & is motivated to work more proactively now, organising workshops for staff who handle chemicals and hazardous materials, for operations, labs, material maintenance, fire & security.
  • Because of the recognised value of the NEBOSH Diploma, Hakam from PIC was selected from 178 companies to sit on an expert panel for hazardous substances.
  • He has developed good relations in health & safety on an international level, outside Kuwait , participating in an ILO specialist group conference on hazardous substances in Geneva.
