Continuous investment in HSE initiatives will make positive attitudes towards health and safety part of the corporate culture, claims Margaret Jukes of Connaught Compliance Gulf Services, the leading provider of health and safety training in the region.

One such company that has made HSE part of its corporate culture is Carillion Alawi LLC, who recruit the assistance of Connaught to support the training initiatives associated with Carillion's HSE management policy.

With an HSE Management policy based on an ACCE model (awareness, competence, compliance and excellence), Carillion allows its employees to progress through each of the various levels, with the assistance from Connaught in the awareness and competence areas.

Margaret Jukes, Operations Manager said, "Carillion Alawi has a good reputation in the marketplace and is currently winning many of the large construction projects taking place in Oman at this time. The company has a strong HSE policy, both globally and locally, which helps its reputation enormously when attempting to secure business from companies looking for international standards and on-time delivery. It is a pleasure to be working with such a forward-thinking corporation and we look hope to enhance Carillion's already strong HSE corporate culture."

A major global construction company with large projects in Oman such as the City Centre development, the airport interchange project and having previously completed Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa, Carillion is utilising the expertise of CHSS to offer a number of HSE training solutions to its employees including IOSH Managing Safely and the NEBOSH International Certificate.

Carillion also implements a programme called 'Don't Walk By' on all sites, which encourages employees to raise concern regarding any HSE related issues to the site management and ultimately the company's head office.

According to Carillion's management, the company has had no lost time injuries so far this year, so the system is definitely having an effect. However with the help of CHSS training the company aims to maintain and boost employee motivation and enthusiasm.

David Skinner, Regional Manager of Carillion Alawi LLC said, "We believe that competent and trained staff are crucial in carrying out projects effectively. We also believe that reputation is very important and with this in mind, correct implementation of our rigorous HSE policies is essential to avoid lost time unnecessary costs, but most importantly on-site injuries. Teaming up with Connaught will allow our employees to stay focused on HSE issues as well as facilitating their career progression.

As a current student of the NEBOSH Diploma himself which he is studying with Connaught, Skinner certainly practises what he preaches; believing that to be a strong manager you must have an understanding of all areas of expertise including HSE. "Whilst Safety management can be directed from the top", says Skinner, "For effective implementation a culture must be created where all employees understand the importance of HSE and receive praise for good practise, we believe that this coupled with good training and support from Connaught is the only way to make a difference."

Connaught Compliance Gulf Services offers internationally accredited training courses including NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) and IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health). In 2005 over 23,000 delegates attended Connaught training courses either on an open course basis or in-house and successfully gained globally recognised qualifications.
